Chinese New Year 2012

The Year of the Dragon 23 January 2012

New Year is the most important event in the Chinese calendar. It’s a special occasion whichever part of the world you’re in, and nearly always marked by family gatherings, food rituals, offerings at temples and the colour red.

2012 is the Year of the Dragon, also known as the Year of the Water Dragon, which occurs only every 60 years. The element of water tempers and calms the fiery dragons, allowing them to see from other people’s point of view….

Celebrations in Amsterdam will be held on Sunday, 29 January with the ‘Asian Food Festival’. The new festival will breathe fire into the historic Nieuwmarkt,  in the main square of Amsterdam Chinatown neighbourhood, while offering plenty of culinary delights and street performances – including the traditional dragon dance.

Smaller-scale, but no less festive parties take place on public squares across the city…….

So on Monday we will enter the dragon or the dragon will enter our lives. Monday January 23 is the first day of the Chinese New Year 2012 which will end on February 9, 2013.
